Sadly, a number of the magazines I wrote for no longer exist. Manor, the award-winning South West magazine, didn't last long. The Countryman ceased publication after 96 years. The print edition of Brides disappeared too, along with quite a few others whose pages are scattered here.
Gardening magazines seem to have fared rather better. House & Garden, Gardens Illustrated and The English Garden - all of which I’ve written for - are still going, as are Coast, Landscape, Condé Nast Traveller, Global Citizen, and the wonderful Dartmoor Magazine, published on my doorstep, for which I wrote quite a few pieces many moons ago. Country Smallholding is another publication that is still around! Didn't Victoria Beckham give David a subscription of Country Smallholding for Valentines?!

HORTUS: 'the New Yorker of horticultural reading' was one of my favourite publications to write for. Its editor, David Wheeler, was a writer’s editor.

The eclectic life of a freelancer: aircraft wrecks on Dartmoor, an interview with Jo Malone and rotters in the family tree!

Living in Devon, I've always enjoyed learning about those people and places close to home. But the life of a freelance journalist is nothing if not varied, and one of its pleasures is never quite knowing where your curiosity will take you next.

These days, much of my time is devoted to creating my own arts and literary magazine, Anthophile, but I still take on the occasional writing commission, particularly when it involves travel, or gardens, and the people that make both so enjoyable. Gardeners have always been among my favourite people, and I never need much persuading to spend time in their company, or their gardens.
